When an IV actually helps
IV fluids are good at one specific thing: putting fluid and electrolytes back into someone who has lost too much of both and cannot replace them by drinking.
That covers more situations than people expect. A stomach bug where nothing stays down. Food poisoning. A day at altitude that got away from you. Heat, a hard effort, a long flight, a rough night. In all of those the problem is volume, and fluid into a vein fixes volume faster than fluid into a stomach that is rejecting it.
It is also worth being clear about what an IV does not do. It does not treat the infection that caused the vomiting. It does not shorten a virus. If you are unwell because something is wrong rather than because you are dry, fluids will make you more comfortable without fixing the cause — and sometimes the honest answer is that you need a diagnosis, not a drip.
